Please support this entry (as well as my other one seen below! by clicking "I'd wear this" over on the right, just under the "Add to my Favourites" button!! If I somehow win, I'll definitely give away at least 5 of the t-shirts to random deviants via a raffle, as thanks for voting for me~
Firstly, thank you for the compliment. Secondly, please share with me how you define what is a monster and what is not. I'm simply curious to what your reasons are that this is not 'monster' material. c: What makes something monstrous? I want to understand your point of view.
To me, a monster is a creature of fantasy. Something that couldn't be real/is unrealistic but could still function. According to dictionary.com, a monster is "a legendary animal combining features of animal and human form or having the forms of various animals in combination, as a centaur, griffin, or sphinx." And by that definition, I think I have, in this shirt much more than the other, created a cute "monster".
Your welcome. To me, monsters really are meant to strike fear. what you've drawn is more fantasy creature than a monster to me. Griffins and centaurs are more fantastical and a bit more benign than let's say a werewolf or a krakken. Monsters are meant to strike fear and terror, even the cute ones.
Plus, if you where to check some place like merriam-webster, the definition is a lot more clarifying than the one given on dictionary.com.
" a : an animal or plant of abnormal form or structure b : one who deviates from normal or acceptable behavior or character 2 : a threatening force 3 a : an animal of strange or terrifying shape b : one unusually large for its kind 4 : something monstrous; especially : a person of unnatural or extreme ugliness, deformity, wickedness, or cruelty "
I hope this makes you understand how i see what a monster is. C8
b and 3a prove this is a monster. This monster deviates from what's normal. A fish with a brush for a tail? Abnormal. Imagine you woke up one day with brushes for fingers. People wouldn't (normally) say, "awww how cute." They'd be weirded out and call you a monster. And if you think that that's stretching it, 3a makes it even clearer. This is an animal. It is a strange shape. Therefore it is a monster.
If your only using b and 3a, then I don't think that really proves it's a monster.
If I woke up with brushes for fingers, I wouldn't be called a monster, I'd be called weird and strange. Why? What's terrifying about brushes for fingers? What's the most frightful thing I can do? Paint someone's wedding dress blue? Splatter paint onto my cat? Be able to do more precise graffiti?
To really be something, you need more than 1 or 2 qualifications don't you think?
Out of those definitions, the one I think is most describing of an object would be 1 or 3. But I do understand your point, to an extent. When I aim to make something cute, though, I am to make it only cute, not scary, so I think that's where our views start to differentiate. :3 From your perspective, I do see how you could think this isn't 'monstrous' haha (even if I view a fantasy creature and a monster to be quite similar).
